I turned the radio on recently and heard a pastor talking about spiritual growth. This may not have been the main topic for his message but he said, “If you are not growing what are you going to do to change that?”
I have thought a lot about that these last few days as I wondered what I can do to bring about new growth. What will cause a stronger, more alive spiritual life within? James 4:2 tells me I have not because I ask not. I will ask God to direct me in my search for spiritual nourishment.
1Peter talks about the growth that comes from the milk of the Word. Yet there comes a time to move past the milk to more solid food that is found only in the Word of God. If I read and study God’s Word I will find nourishment and strength for my soul.
The parable of the mustard seed teaches me that to have even the smallest amount of faith will bring strength that can move mountains. If I “plant” my mustard seed of faith, feed and care for it, and give plenty of exercise, I should find my faith growing stronger every day.
2Peter 3:18 says, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” God’s grace will provide in my effort to grow.
So if I ask, study, plant, then tend the seed, I will have grown spiritually to where I can walk upright being strong enough to face each day’s problems, concerns, and joys with the spiritual strength and understanding of new growth.
It’s a blessing to know that God’s Word truly does hold the answers and fulfillment for any question or need I may face.
